How to create server alias

Can anyone descrive in principle how a Web server alias is actually set
up? How do you get a server alias to point to a particular server with
a particular IP address within a large organisation? The outcome being
that when a user types the alias url into the address bar, the correct
page appears in the browser window
Hi
Does it somehow relate to SQL Server?

How to create report using WebService as DataSource.

Hi,

We created a simple web serivce having a Web Method which accepts a string parameter and returns "Hello World" concatenated with parameter value. We tested this web service by browsing it through IE and it was working fine by accepting a parameter and displaying the "Hello World " concated with the value given through the parameter when clicked on "Invoke" button.

We now created a Reporting Services 2005 project using BI having a report for which the data source will be the web service which is mentioned above. We defined a parameter for the report which will pass the value to the webservice and the report will display the returned value from the web service.

When we have done the report and executed by giving a value to the parameter and clicking on view report button it was displaying the "Hello World" but the parameter which we passed to the web service is not getting concatenated. When we tried to trace the application we could see that the value passed to the web service web method was comming as null. So kindly help me where I went wrong in developing such a kind of report which is not passing a parmeter to webservice.

Kindly provide us the solution in order to make this issue to be resolved.

Thanks in Advance.I can concur with VDeevi, I was able to recreate the exact same issue. In my case I'm passing parameters to a web service that is returning a dataset. When I set a default value in the webmethod it returns a dataset successfully. My problem is also that the parameters are not getting passed to the web service.

What I think is strange is that I've done the BOL sample with the SSRS web service Listchildren method and it works successfully. Does that mean that the problem is not in SSRS but in my implementation of the web service?

This works:

<WebMethod()> _
Public Function GetTestDataset() As System.Xml.XmlElement
Dim TestXDataset As New TestXDataset()
TestXDataset.Fill(1)
Dim xdd As System.Xml.XmlDataDocument = New System.Xml.XmlDataDocument(TestXDataset)
Dim docElem As System.Xml.XmlElement = xdd.DocumentElement
Return docElem
End Function

This doesn't work:

<WebMethod()> _
Public Function GetTestDataset(ByVal ID As Integer) As System.Xml.XmlElement
Dim TestXDataset As New TestXDataset()
TestXDataset.Fill(ID)
Dim xdd As System.Xml.XmlDataDocument = New System.Xml.XmlDataDocument(TestXDataset)
Dim docElem As System.Xml.XmlElement = xdd.DocumentElement
Return docElem
End Function

|||

It's probably not your implementation, but in the parsing specifics of the SoapAction and Namespace.

For example, if your SoapAction is http://tempuri.org/HelloMyNameIs, we split it into http://tempuri.org and HelloMyNameIs throwing away the separating / character.

But if you look at the way webservice is defined, the namespace is actually http://tempuri.org/ - with a trailing /.

So in this case, when method name/namespace can not be correctly derived from SoapAction and when SoapAction can not be correctly derived from method name (in the above case we would get http://tempuri.org//HelloMyNameIs) you should use both <Method …/> and <SoapAction …/>, e.g.

<Query>
<Method Namespace="http://tempuri.org/" Name="HelloMyNameIs"/>
<SoapAction>http://tempuri.org/HelloMyNameIs</SoapAction>
</Query>

We are working on updates to the documentation.

|||Thanks Brain, it really helped us to solve this issue.

Thanks once again,|||Worked for me as well. Thanks a lot!

How to create internet connection?

Hi everybody,
Is there a client side approach of sending and receiving data from a sql database without a web service or a server component (servicedcomponent and server app)? How can you simulate a network connection over the internet that could send and receive data from and to database?

How can you create a class that would do the same task as a network connection using internet communication as medium? Please point me to topics and documents about this matter.

Thanks.

denpsia

SQLServer provides this feature.

I move this post.

In .NET you would use the HttpWebRequest class, here is a simple bit of sample code to send a SOAP packet.

private void soapRequest()
{
Uri soapUri = new Uri("http://" + soapServer + "/clear_integrated");
string soapRequest =
"<?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"utf-8\"?>" +
"<SOAP-ENV:Envelope xmlns:SOAP-ENV=\"http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/\" " +
"xmlns:sql=\"http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2004/SOAP\">" +
"<SOAP-ENV:Body>" +
"<sql:sqlbatch>" +
"<sql:BatchCommands>" +
"select * from authors" +
"</sql:BatchCommands>" +
"</sql:sqlbatch>" +
"</SOAP-ENV:Body>" +
"</SOAP-ENV:Envelope>";

System.Text.UTF8Encoding utfEncoder = new UTF8Encoding();
byte [] requestBytes = utfEncoder.GetBytes(soapRequest);

// Do the work.
for(int i=1; i<=loopCount; i++)
{
try
{
HttpWebRequest webRequest = (System.Net.HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(soapUri);
webRequest.Credentials = System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials;
webRequest.Timeout = timeout;
webRequest.KeepAlive = true;
webRequest.Headers.Add("SOAPAction", "\"http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2004/SOAPsqlbatch\"");
webRequest.ContentType = "text/xml;charset=\"utf-8\"";
webRequest.Accept = "text/xml";
webRequest.Method = "POST";
webRequest.ContentLength = requestBytes.Length;
Stream requestStream = webRequest.GetRequestStream();
requestStream.Write(requestBytes, 0, requestBytes.Length);
requestStream.Close();
WebResponse webResponse = webRequest.GetResponse();

StreamReader responseStream =
new System.IO.StreamReader(webResponse.GetResponseStream(), Encoding.UTF8);

string stringResponse = responseStream.ReadToEnd();
responseStream.Close();
webResponse.Close();

if (1445 != stringResponse.Length) failCount++;

}
catch (Exception ex)
{
logex(ex);

}
}
}

Hi Matt,

This topic is quite old. Thanks for the reply, at that time I post this topic, I am working on windows application on a tablet pc that needs internet connection and remote access to a remote MySQL database. This code of yours is for asp.net and how exactly would the data be transmitted? What protocol or utility would handle the actual sending of data, in my work then we uses VPN to establish remote database connection and ras dialup to establish internet connection. Thanks for the code, it might proved useful next time.

How to create a backup("failover") server?

Hi,
We have a database (SQL SERVER 7.0) and web server on the same NT4
machine(Everything runs off here). The databases started crashing when
being updated with a VB6 program. Now, it's crashing even after we
disable the VB6 program. This has never happen before and we are not
exactly database experts. We muddle through when we have to but now
it's harder.
We have a good number of web applications that uses the database and
it's a pain when it keeps crashing. We have a test server(Win2k) with
SQL Server 7.0 installed but without any of the databases on the Main
server. We would like to temporary use the test server as a
backup("failover") database server until we can figure out the problem
and was wonder how to do this?

How to create 3 users tables?

Hello,

In my web site I have 2 types of users: students and professors.
All users need to login but the personal information for each user type has different fields.

So I create 3 tables: professors, students and authentication,
"professors" will have all the personal data from professors.
"students" will have all the personal data from students.
authentication will have the username and password from all users.

How can i link authentication table to both professors and students tables so when the user logins i get the data from that user, either a professor or student?

And is the right way to do this?

I am using SQL 2005 and Asp.Net 2.0

Thanks,
Miguel

Since students are associated with their professors and vice versa, I would create the realtionship as follows:

Table: Staff
Columns: StaffID, FirstName, LastName, Username, Password

Table: Students
Columns: StudentID, FirstName, LastName, Username, Password

Table: StudentsStaff
Columns: StaffID, StudentID

Each time a student is assigned to a professor, the database will add to the StudentsStaff table the ID of the student and the ID of the professor. Then you will be able to get data representing all the professors a student is enrolled with and all the students a professor has enrolled.

How to creat a database via SQL Querry Analyzer to a Web Server

I am new to ASP.NET and met a problem about access a database on a Web Server (www.myserver.com). My meaning here that I created a .sql from my localhost to test, but when to upload to my web server on the internet, an error occured: "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: SQL Server does not exist or access denied".
Anyone here can help me to solve my problem. Waiting for your reply soon. Thanksyour SQL Connection on your local host and your Server aren't the same. your should check your connectionstring, eypecially the servername.|||First of all thank to MISIU...
Your idea i had to try first! Just here, I change my line of code from <Add key> to a connection string to myserver for instance hereby. But nothing looked good and still got the above problem. Could you pls show me the detail of creat a database and publish it to my Web Server. And i am waiting for anyone give me the BEST. God bless all of you!

How to copy structure of database online

Hi!

I have to add a new functionnality in our Web application but i have

no idea how to do it. What i have to do is to allow user to create a

copy of the BD currently use and to save it on a new name. What i need

is only the structure not the data. I need to copy all table, view,

function and stored proc. I have no idea where to start. I found on

this forum post where it says to detach then copy and the attach the BD

but i can't do to this because i don't want other users on our web

application to lost the connection with the DB.

So was is the best way to do this ?

Thanks !!

you can leverage SMO namespaces/classes to accomplish this from a webapp. There are several ways to actually do this, but I think SMO is the "optimal"/recommend approach here. Again, all you need are the scripts, not the data.

http://www.sqlteam.com/item.asp?ItemID=23185

Derek

|||Thanks !! This is exactly what i was looking for. I have another question. When i iterate for all my tables for example i can have the script of the table using myTable.script(). What i was wondering is how can i send this script to SQL Server ? First i probably need to create my new database but do i have to do this using script ?|||

Ok i think i've figure out how to send my script but once again i have another question. Right now what i'm doing is this:

For Each tmpTable In MainDB.Tables

NewDB.ExecuteNonQuery(tmpTable .Script)

Next

This seems to created my tables. Our DB contain over 700 tables,over 500 stored proc and over 200 views. So what i was wondering, is it a good solution to do this like i'm doing right now or will it be better to put all the script in one collection string and then execute on big script ?

Thanks !

Hi all,

I am using Visual web developper 2005 with sql server express 2005 and i have also sql server management studio express. it's all free now .

my web site is ready

I didn't have problem to upload my site to my hoster.

Now I want to upload all my tables and my stored procedure create locally with VWD express

How can i do it ?

NB: I know i can't design DB (create/modify tables and stored proc) with express edition

thank's for your help

Hi all,

I have my all tables and stored procedures on the remote server and my site is working well but it was very hard to.

let me resume SSMSE steps for tables:

1. Connect to local server

2. Connect to remote server

3. Create Sql file by using "Script out Create " command on the local table

4. Change connection from local to remote

5. execute your sq file to create table on the remote DB

6. Open table on remote DB

7. Open table on local DB

8. use copy/paste to copy rows from local to remote

you must do it for all table including aspnet tables when you use features like menbership, roles profiles and personalization

for stored procedures no steps 6 7 8 and you must change the name of the databases on thesql file

How to copy db to production server

I've developing a small asp.net app that is using SQL Server (developer
edition on my PC). I am ready to deploy my app on my web server/space (that
I am renting from a hosting company) for further testing before we go live.
I need to copy my database from my sql server instance to a sql server
instance at my host's facility. I am able to connect to that server via
enterprise manager. Is the Copy Database Wizard the way to go here, or
should export a script and then run that on the web sql server instance? I
do not have much data in my db, so I don't have to copy the data, but it
would be nice.

I would put all code under version control, and that includes any data
you may have tables that you pre-load. (Fixed lookup tables and such).
Then I would install the database on the production server from those
scripts.

database to production server. For the same platform migration (From SQL
Server to SQL Server), it can migrate all supported objects. If you need to
migrate to different database (for instance, from Oracle to SQL Server),
then all tables/views/constraints/indexes/data are migrated, but not
database specific objects, such as function/procedure/packages.
